Spain has two types of motorways:

Autovías – these are free and are marked with “A” followed by their number (e.g. A8). They are often crowded, with traffic jams at entrances and exits.
Autopistas – these are tolled according to vehicle category and are marked with “AP” followed by their number (e.g. AP8). Most run parallel to the Autovías, but traffic flows freely without congestion.

You can pay at motorway toll stations in cash or by card. When you enter the motorway you receive a ticket, and on exit you stop at the toll station and pay the toll according to your vehicle category.
