Comparing GPS fleet tracking companies in Romania 2026: criteria, contract terms, and alternatives

In short: several GPS fleet tracking providers operate on the Romanian market — CargoTrack, TrackGPS, SafeFleet, Fomco GPS and others. The real differences are not in the core features, which are similar, but in the commercial terms: who publishes prices, who requires a minimum contract period, who installs for free and how quickly. Below you’ll find a comparison based on verifiable criteria, along with the questions worth asking before you sign.

Comparison based on verifiable criteria

The table below contains only information published by each company on its own website, checked in August 2026. Where a piece of information is not published, we wrote “not published” — this does not mean the service doesn’t exist, only that it cannot be verified publicly before requesting a quote.

An honest note on the figures: “monitored units” doesn’t mean the same thing for every provider. TrackGPS declares 130,000 monitored assets, a category that also includes equipment or machinery, not just vehicles. CargoTrack declares over 45,000 vehicles. Compare like-for-like metrics before drawing a conclusion.

What actually sets providers apart

Core features — real-time positioning, route history, reports, alerts — are comparable across all serious providers. The differences that matter for a fleet show up elsewhere.

Contract terms

The question that changes the math the most is whether there is a minimum contract period. A 24- or 36-month contract turns a seemingly cheap subscription into a commitment of several thousand euros. CargoTrack does not impose a minimum period; the other providers in the table do not publish this information, so you need to ask for it explicitly before signing.

Installation cost and logistics

For a fleet of 20 trucks, installation can mean taking vehicles off the road and driving them to a workshop. CargoTrack installs for free, with its own teams that travel to the vehicle’s location, within 48 hours at most. The other providers do not publish their installation policy — ask who comes out, how much it costs and how long it takes for the whole fleet.

How much a single device does

If you need tracking, tachograph download, fuel consumption monitoring and road toll payment, check whether they all work on the same device or whether you need separate equipment. At CargoTrack, a single device covers road tolls, tachograph data download and fuel consumption monitoring.

Coverage for international transport

If you run trips outside Romania, check in which countries the road toll can be paid automatically. CargoTrack covers 16 European toll domains — 15 countries plus tunnels and bridges. Other providers declare international coverage without detailing the list, or mention only a few countries.

Alternatives to SafeFleet, TrackGPS or Fomco GPS

If you already use one of these providers and are looking for an alternative, the criteria below are the ones that come up most often in conversations with hauliers switching providers:

  • Are you locked into a contract? Check the expiry date and the automatic renewal clause. A provider with no minimum period leaves you free to test in parallel.
  • Who pays for reinstallation? When you switch providers, the old devices are removed and new ones are installed. Ask who covers the cost and how long it takes for the whole fleet.
  • What happens to your history? Data from the old platform is not transferred automatically. Download the reports you need before closing your account.
  • Compatibility with existing tachographs — especially if you have second-generation smart tachographs, check compatibility explicitly before signing.
  • Test first. All providers in the table offer some form of demo. Ask for one on a real vehicle, not a presentation.

Seven questions to ask any provider before signing

  1. Is there a minimum contract period? What happens if I cancel early?
  2. Is installation included? Who comes out, and how long does it take to install across the whole fleet?
  3. Is the device purchased or rented? Who owns it at the end of the contract?
  4. Does the subscription include all modules, or are fuel consumption, tachograph and road tolls billed separately?
  5. In which countries can I pay road tolls automatically with the same device?
  6. What happens if a device fails? Who covers the replacement and how quickly?
  7. Can I test it on a real vehicle, under actual operating conditions, before signing?

Frequently asked questions

Which are the main GPS tracking companies in Romania?

In the freight transport segment, the providers include CargoTrack (Oradea), TrackGPS (Cluj-Napoca), SafeFleet (Timișoara) and Fomco GPS. All offer real-time tracking, tachograph data download and fuel consumption monitoring. The differences lie in the commercial terms and in coverage for road tolls in Europe.

What is an alternative to SafeFleet for fleet management?

CargoTrack, TrackGPS and Fomco GPS offer comparable services in terms of core features. If you switch providers, check the remaining contract period, who covers the reinstallation cost and compatibility with the tachographs already in your fleet.

Which GPS tracking company is right for a fleet of 20 trucks?

At this size, installation logistics and contract terms matter most. Twenty vehicles can’t be taken off the road at the same time, so a provider that installs at the vehicle’s location significantly reduces lost availability. Request quotes from at least two providers and compare the total cost over 12 months, not just the monthly subscription.

How much does a GPS tracking system for trucks cost?

The cost has two components: the device, purchased once, and the monthly subscription per vehicle. None of the providers in the comparison publishes prices on its website, so the only way to compare is to request quotes from several. When you do, ask for the total cost over 12 months, including installation and all modules.

Can I switch GPS tracking providers during the contract?

It depends on the contract. Some providers impose a minimum period, and early termination may trigger penalties. CargoTrack does not impose a minimum contract period. Check the term and automatic renewal clauses in your current contract before starting talks with another provider.
