Whether you are an individual or a company, when you get to Slovenia you have to pay for a vignette to “cruise” on highways and expressways.

The Slovenia vignette in 2026: what has changed

Good news for Romanian drivers: e-vignette prices remained unchanged in 2026 – 16 euros for 7 days, 32 euros per month and 117.50 euros per year for category 2A (cars).

The most important change: since January 1, 2026, the coastal expressways H5 (Škofije – Koper) and H6 (Koper – Izola) no longer require a vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tons, having been reclassified as main roads. The measure is temporary, until the Koper – Dragonja expressway is completed, and lets you reach Croatia along the coast without a Slovenian e-vignette.

Also note that crossing the Karawanks Tunnel from Austria now costs 9 euros per crossing (not included in the vignette), and the fine for not having an e-vignette starts at 300 euros. Always check the updated prices on the official website evinjeta.dars.si before you set off.

What's more, for the Karawanks Tunnel connecting Slovenia and Austria there is an additional charge of 9 euros per crossing. If you cross it frequently, there is also a points card with 14 crossings for 40.40 euros.

Vehicles over 3.5 tons have their own rules and road tolls in Slovenia, which we will discuss a bit later.

In this article, then, we present everything you need to know about the vignette and road tolls for Slovenia!

How do I check whether I need a Slovenia vignette?

If your route includes highways and expressways, you need a vignette for Slovenia. These are managed by the company Dars, which generally carries out the Slovenia vignette checks, although the authorities sometimes step in as well.

However, there are a few exceptions where a vignette is not required in Slovenia for vehicles up to 3.5 tons:

  • The coastal expressways H5 (Škofije – Koper) and H6 (Koper – Izola) – exempt from the vignette since January 1, 2026, having been reclassified as main roads;
  • The former Maribor expressway (H2), between Pesnica and Tezno, reclassified as a regional road;
  • The section of the Gorenjska highway (A2) between the Austrian border and the Hrušica junction – passage is covered by the separate Karawanks Tunnel toll.

Where can I buy a physical Slovenia vignette?

Since February 2022, you can no longer buy a windshield sticker Slovenia vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tons at a physical location. You can, however, go to a gas station near the border or a Dars service station and get an e-vignette.

Until then it was mandatory to get a sticker displayed on the vehicle's windshield, in a highly visible spot; it has been replaced by the digital format – the e-vignette.

Slovenia road toll for vehicles over 3.5 tons

Slovenia is one of the countries where vehicles over 3.5 tons must have an on-board device installed that automatically calculates the road toll amount.

The DarsGo electronic system, just as in Slovakia, is requested on entering the country, at a Dars gas station or service station, for a processing fee of 10 euros.

You need the vehicle registration certificate, as well as the certificate attesting its emission class.

You can also apply online to have the DarsGo device sent to your home before you actually leave for Slovenia.

You'll find here details on installing the device, as well as a brief explanation of how to obtain it.

This device automatically calculates how much you have to pay when you drive on a highway or expressway. The total network is 623 kilometers long, of which 128 are toll sections.

The cost of the road toll in Slovenia is based on:

  • Distance traveled;
  • number of axles;
  • emission class.

You can pay the road toll in Slovenia in advance or at the end.

Unused prepaid credit is refunded to you via an invoice. Keep in mind, however, that there is a 6 euro fee for issuing the invoice, which is why amounts less than or equal to this value will not be refunded.
