The Austria vignette in 2026: what has changed
The 2026 vignette year (valid from December 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027) brings some important changes for drivers transiting Austria:
- New ASFINAG rates: the annual vignette for cars costs 106.80 euros (up from 103.80 euros in 2025), and the 10-day vignette rose from 11.50 to 12.80 euros. For motorcycles, the annual vignette is 42.70 euros.
- Higher fines: since the start of 2026, the substitute toll (Ersatzmaut) for not having a vignette has increased from 120 to 200 euros for cars and from 65 to 100 euros for motorcycles.
- Last year of the sticker vignette: the windshield sticker vignette, in bright red (“feuerrot”), is being sold for the last time in 2026. From the 2027 vignette year on, there will only be the digital vignette.
- Immediate validity online: 1-day and 10-day digital vignettes bought online can be valid immediately; for the 2-month and annual vignettes, validity only starts on the 18th day after purchase, so plan your purchase ahead.
- Higher section tolls: as of January 1, 2026, a single trip on the A 13 Brenner costs 12.50 euros, on the A 10 Tauern 15.00 euros, and on the S 16 Arlberg 13.00 euros.
Road tolls in Austria are mandatory for all vehicles with a maximum authorized gross weight of up to and including 3.5 tons.
For vehicles over 3.5 tons, road tolls are paid through a device called the GO-Box, which records every tolled point you pass.
Below in this article you'll find all the information you need to plan your trip to Austria efficiently.
How do I check if I need a vignette for Austria?
If you're planning to visit or transit Austria in the near future, or you've simply scheduled a transport job in this country, it's a good idea to check in advance whether your route includes toll roads.
You can check this here.

If you're a haulier, carry passengers or want to go on a trip in a motorhome, you can calculate road tolls in Austria here.
P.S. Don't forget that in this case you will need a GO-Box to pay road tolls.

You have over 1,316 points of sale in Austria alone to buy these vignettes or GO-Boxes in person, and over 120 points in other countries such as (the Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Switzerland or Liechtenstein).

What is the difference between the digital vignette and the digital section toll?
The digital vignette is purchased if you drive your vehicle on the roads and expressways in Austria that require a vignette.
The digital section toll is purchased strictly for the following 6 sections of the Austrian highway network.
- A 9 Pyhrn highway: between the Spital/Pyhrn junction and the Adning junction (Bosruck tunnel), and between the St. Michael junction and Übelbach (Gleinalm tunnel).
- A 10 Tauern highway: between the Flachau junction and the Rennweg junction (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels).
- A 11 Karawanken highway: between the St. Jakob im Rosental junction and the national border in the Karawanken tunnel.
- A 13 Brenner highway: the toll must be paid along the entire A 13 highway.
- S 16 Arlberg expressway: between the St. Anton am Arlberg junction and the Langen am Arlberg junction.
- Note: if you've paid a digital toll for one of the 6 sections, you won't also need the digital vignette mentioned above.

Austria vignette for vehicles over 3.5 tons (trucks, buses, motorhomes)
A GO-Box is required; see the section with information about the device.
Austria road toll for vehicles over 3.5 tons

All vehicles with a maximum permissible weight over 3.5 tons are subject to a distance-based “GO” toll when using Austrian highways and expressways.
If you drive in Austria with a truck, bus or motorhome, you should know that the toll can only be paid with a GO-Box, which is mounted on the vehicle's windshield.
The GO-Box is the only official Austrian device that hauliers can use to pay road tolls in Austria.
This device can be picked up from any of the more than 175 GO points of sale in Austria and beyond.
GO-Box for trucks, GO-Box for buses and motorhomes
| Payment methods | Drivers have two options: the post-pay option (retroactive payment) – local GO-Box device. The pre-pay option (paying in advance by topping up the device) – ASFINAG local GO-Box device only. |
| The toll device | The GO-Box payment device is mandatory for vehicles over 3.5 tons! |
| Useful information | GO-Box devices can be picked up from any GO point; see here the list and map of distribution points. Within 28 days of the purchase date, the emission class must be declared and validated for the GO-Box device. A copy of the vehicle registration certificate and a copy of the CEMT must be sent to ASFINAG. If you don't declare the emission class within this period, you risk a substitute toll (Ersatzmaut) of 270 euros! The post-pay payment method works with a device installed by the driver. It can be obtained from any Go-Maut distribution point, and the issue fee is 5 euros. The pre-pay payment method is recommended for hauliers who drive occasionally. Drivers can buy and top up their devices with credit using their fuel card. The device can be topped up with a minimum of 75.00 euros, and the maximum balance can reach up to 500 euros (VAT included). For more details, visit the GO-Maut website, https://www.go-maut.at/portal/portal. |
| Retroactive payment (post-pay) | The road toll can be paid retroactively within 5 hours or 100 km (in both directions of travel). The driver must stop at the nearest GO distribution point, present the device and declare the route. |
| Tunnels and bridges | Most tunnel tolls are included in the GO-Maut system. Tolls for the Felbertauern Strasse and the Karawanken tunnel can be paid separately from the system using a fuel card. |
| Payment options for registered customers | The pre-pay charging system is recommended for less frequent trips through Austria. The GO-Box can be topped up with a minimum of €75 and up to €400; some hauliers can top it up directly with a Shell card. |
| Invoicing | A tax invoice is issued by the provider. |
| VAT | Yes, 20% |

In what currency can the Austria vignette be paid?
The euro is the legal currency of 21 EU member states, including Austria. When you buy the vignette for Austria, you'll pay in euros.
If you buy the vignette online or in person at card terminals (POS) using a bank card, it's good to know that you don't need a euro card — you can just as well pay in lei, forints, zlotys, etc.
Pay close attention to the lei–euro exchange rate. Always check the rate at the time of purchase so you don't get any surprises later.
Want to buy the Austria vignette in cash?
If you choose to buy the vignette at gas stations or at one of the more than 1,316 points of sale make sure you always have euros in cash on you, because you'll only be able to pay in euros!
Our recommendations:
- Be careful with in-person payments at card terminals (POS) — make sure your bank allows card payments abroad.
- For online payments, make sure you've enabled online card payments.
Do I also need a vignette for a trailer in Austria?
No additional vignette is required for trailers, mobile homes and motorcycle trailers.
How much is the fine for not having a vignette in Austria?
If you buy a physical vignette, make sure you stick it somewhere clearly visible, on the lower left side of the windshield or behind the rearview mirror. The same advice applies to motorcycles.
Their color changes every year, so it's very easy for a police patrol, customs officers or enforcement staff to see whether or not you have a valid vignette.
The color for the 2026 Austria vignette is bright red (“feuerrot”). This is the last year of the sticker vignette: from the 2027 vignette year, Austria will only have the digital vignette.
If you're caught on Austrian highways without a vignette, the fine (Ersatzmaut) is 200 EUR if you pay on the spot (100 EUR for motorcycles).
If the vignette has been tampered with (damaged vignette, vignette residue, etc.), or if the toll device is missing or has insufficient funds, the fine is 400 EUR (200 EUR for motorcycles).
However, if you've run out of funds in your account, you have 5 hours (or 100 km) to top up the amount needed to pay the toll.
If you refuse to pay on the spot, the fine in court proceedings can range from 300 EUR to 3,000 EUR.
To make sure your vignette is active and you don't risk a fine, you can check right here.
