Denmark Vignette 2026 – Everything You Need to Know…

Denmark vignette: road tolls and toll crossings for trucks

In short: In Denmark there is no vignette for passenger cars — small vehicles use the roads free of charge, paying only the separate tolls for the Storebælt and Øresund bridges. For trucks over 12 tons, a per-kilometer toll (kilometerafgift) was introduced on January 1, 2025, applied on a network of about 10,900 km: between 0.13 and 1.10 Danish kroner/km, depending on the CO2 emission class and the vehicle’s weight, with rates of up to 1.65 kroner/km in low-emission zones. From January 1, 2027, the Danish authorities plan to extend the toll to all trucks over 3.5 tons.

Denmark is a popular tourist destination, and there’s good news for those who want to travel to Denmark in their own car. The Denmark vignette is free for small vehicles, so you don’t have to stress about the cost or the process of buying one.

Road Tolls in Denmark in 2026: What Has Changed

On January 1, 2025, Denmark dropped the Eurovignette and switched to per-kilometer charging (kilometerafgift) for trucks over 12 tons, on a network of about 10,900 km. The rate depends on the CO2 emission class and the vehicle’s weight: from 0.13 kroner/km for zero-emission trucks up to 1.10 kroner/km (1.65 kroner/km in low-emission zones) for the most polluting trucks over 32 tons.

From January 1, 2027, the Danish authorities plan to extend the per-kilometer toll to all trucks over 3.5 tons, so hauliers with heavy commercial vehicles under 12 tons also need to prepare in advance.

Passenger cars still drive free of charge on Danish roads, but the bridges remain tolled. In 2026, crossing the Storebælt Bridge costs a passenger car under 6 meters 235 Danish kroner when paying by card or cash, or 205 kroner with automatic payment via BroBizz or license plate recognition; a 10–20 meter truck pays between 887 kroner (with a green discount) and 1,020 kroner per crossing.

On the Øresund Bridge, in 2026, a passenger car up to 6 meters pays 520 Danish kroner at the toll station or 465 kroner with an online ticket, while with the ØresundGO subscription the rate drops to 182 kroner per crossing.

For hauliers, the rules have changed radically: on January 1, 2025, Denmark left the Eurovignette system (previously used together with Luxembourg, Sweden, and Netherlands) and introduced a per-kilometer road toll (kilometerafgift) for trucks over 12 tons.

Note! Whether you’re traveling by car or you’re a haulier with a heavy vehicle, you will pay separately for the Storebælt (Great Belt) Bridge and the Øresund Bridge, which are not included in the per-kilometer toll.

In this article, we cover everything you need to know about transiting Denmark.

Denmark’s Road Toll Network

Denmark has a road toll network that is enforced and checked by mobile cameras and field inspectors.

The tolled network covers about 10,900 km of roads (the main national roads and some municipal roads), and the obligation to pay the per-kilometer toll currently applies only to heavy vehicles with a maximum authorized weight of over 12 tons.

For Denmark’s bridges — the Øresund Bridge (7.85 km) and the Storebælt Bridge (18 km) — the tolls are paid by all drivers when entering the road section.

In case of failure to pay the applicable tolls, a penalty notice is issued, along with a fine payable on the spot if you are checked.

A big advantage in Denmark is that passenger cars and small vehicles remain exempt from road tolls: there is no vignette for cars, and the new per-kilometer toll applies only to trucks.

So you can drive on Denmark’s roads without any problems and pass through the country without the stress of road toll payments.

However, you will need to pay closer attention to the Denmark road toll charged for the bridges, which we discuss later in the article.

Denmark Vignette for Trucks

For heavy vehicles weighing over 12 tons, you no longer buy a daily or monthly vignette: since January 1, 2025, you pay the kilometerafgift, a toll calculated for every kilometer driven on the tolled network.

Tolling is fully electronic: the distance driven is recorded by an on-board GPS unit (OBU) supplied by a toll service provider, and the toll is calculated automatically.

However, you will also have to pay the bridge tolls, which are not included in the per-kilometer toll.

Below, we’ll explain how to register to pay the per-kilometer toll, what the rates are, and how much the bridge tolls cost.

How Much Is the Per-Kilometer Road Toll in Denmark?

There are no longer validity periods as with the old Eurovignette: you pay exactly for the kilometers driven on the tolled network.

The per-kilometer rate varies depending on:

  • The truck’s CO2 emission class (classes 1–5);
  • The maximum authorized weight;
  • The zone you drive in – in low-emission zones (Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Odense, Aarhus, Aalborg), a surcharge of about 50% applies.

Standard rates start at 0.13 Danish kroner/km for zero-emission trucks (CO2 class 5) and reach 1.10 kroner/km for a truck over 32 tons in CO2 class 1, the most polluting.

For example, for a diesel truck in CO2 class 1, the standard rate is about 0.86 kroner/km for 12–18 tons, 1.00 kroner/km for 18–32 tons, and 1.10 kroner/km for over 32 tons. In low-emission zones, the maximum rate can reach 1.65 kroner/km.

The complete, up-to-date list of rates for heavy vehicles can be found on the official website vejafgifter.dk.

How to Register and Pay the Denmark Road Toll Online

Payment is managed through the official website vejafgifter.dk: either you sign a contract with a toll service provider that supplies an on-board GPS unit (OBU) also valid in other European countries, or you buy a KmToll digital ticket before your trip if you don’t have an on-board unit.

To register, you’ll need the following information:

  • the country where your vehicle is registered;
  • the license plate number, exactly as shown on the registration certificate, including all spaces;
  • the maximum authorized weight;
  • the vehicle’s CO2 emission class.

After registering, make sure the on-board unit is active or that the KmToll ticket covers your entire route: enforcement is automatic, using cameras and field inspectors, and failure to pay the toll is punished with a fine.
