Hungary Vignette 2026 – Everything You Need to Know…

In short: in Hungary, the e-vignette is mandatory on almost the entire motorway network. In 2026, the 10-day vignette for cars (D1) costs 6,900 forints (~18 euros / 90 lei), and the 1-day vignette 5,550 forints. Trucks over 3.5 tons and buses do not use a vignette; instead, they pay per kilometer through HU-GO. Driving without a vignette results in a surcharge of 27,790 forints.

If you want to visit our neighbors to the west or are traveling on business, you should know that you need a vignette in Hungary.

The Hungary vignette in 2026: what has changed

Since January 1, 2026, vignette prices in Hungary have been indexed again: the 10-day vignette for cars (D1) now costs 6,900 forints (approximately 18 euros / 90 lei), and the national annual vignette 61,760 forints. The 2026 annual vignettes are valid until January 31, 2027.

Other important changes compared to previous versions of the system:

  • there is a 1-day vignette, introduced in 2024 – 5,550 forints for category D1;
  • category B2 (buses) was eliminated in April 2024 – buses pay a distance-based toll through HU-GO;
  • the surcharge is the same for all categories: 27,790 forints within the first 60 days, 95,730 forints afterward;
  • since 2026, new sections of the M6 (Bátaszék – Croatian border) and the M44 have become toll roads, and in counties affected by roadworks there are discounted county vignettes (for example, 2,500 forints in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén).

Also read the articles about Romania, Austria and Slovakia so you can plan a potentially more complex route that includes the related vignette costs.

The Hungary vignette is not optional on certain road sections, and not having one can bring you a surcharge as an unpleasant “surprise” — in other words, a fine.

It is important to keep in mind, however, that the actual vignette applies only to vehicles up to 3.5 tons. Trucks over 3.5 tons, as well as buses (regardless of weight, since April 2024), pay a road toll in Hungary through the HU-GO system. Below, we’ll explain in detail what each one involves and how you can pay them without much effort.

How do I check whether I need a Hungary vignette?

Unlike other countries where only a few road sections are tolled, a vignette in Hungary is required for almost all public road sections.

There are, however, some toll-free routes:

  • the M31 and M8 motorways, in their entirety;
  • some sections of the M0 expressway – the one between main road no. 1 and the M5 motorway, the section between the M4 (expressway) and the M3 motorway, and the Megyeri Bridge;
  • two bypass sections – the southwestern Pécs section of the M60 motorway and the Kaposvár section of the M9 expressway;
  • two expressways, on certain well-defined sections – the M9, between main roads no. 6 and no. 51, and the M4 between Vecsés and the road leading to Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport.

Where can I buy the Hungary vignette in person?

The Hungary vignette can be purchased in person while still in Romania, at gas stations near the border.

Once you cross into Hungary, you have several options for buying the vignette, from gas stations to travel agencies and various other distributors (https://nmzrt.hu/partnerek), and the state authority's 19 offices.

Fortunately, the entire process takes place online, you don’t need any documents, and you won’t have to stick any sticker on the windshield.

You only need to know the registration number, the country of registration, the vehicle category and the validity period you want for your Hungary vignette.

ATTENTION! Keep the receipt for 2 years after the vignette’s expiration date.

  • D1M – motorcycles;
  • D1 – motorcycles, cars under 3.5 tons, maximum 7 persons + their trailers;
  • D2 – cars not included in D1 that carry more than 7 persons, goods vehicles under 3.5 tons and camper vans;
  • U – trailers of category D2 vehicles;
  • Buses – the former B2 category was eliminated in April 2024, and buses now pay a distance-based road toll through the HU-GO system;

Hungary road toll for vehicles over 3.5 tons

While vehicles up to and including 3.5 tons need a vignette, those exceeding this weight pay a road toll in Hungary.

The HU-GO road toll for Hungary can be paid in two ways:

  • OBU (On-Board Unit);
  • fixed-route ticket.

OBU (On-Board Unit)

PRO5 Blue Background

It is an on-board system which, once you register it on http://www.hu-go.hu/, automatically calculates and pays the road toll in Hungary for your truck, for example.

The device can be topped up with credit on a pre-pay basis at more than 500 gas stations operated by OMV, MOL, etc.

The advantage is that the OBU device adapts to your route, calculating tolls no matter which route you take or if you change it.

Fixed-route ticket

These tickets are available at terminals in certain gas stations and are valid for 2 days. To purchase them, you must specify:

  • the route (optionally the return trip as well) – you cannot deviate from it;
  • the vehicle category;
  • the emission class;
  • Number of axles;
  • the date.

In what currency can the Hungary vignette be paid?

The Hungary vignette is paid in Hungarian forints (HUF).

Do I also need a Hungary vignette for a trailer?

Yes, but only if the towing vehicle falls into category D2 – the trailer needs a category U vignette. Trailers for category D1 are included in the price of the Hungary vignette for the vehicle.

How much is the fine for the Hungary vignette?

The fine or surcharge for the Hungary vignette no longer varies by vehicle category – with the elimination of category B2, the amount is the same for all vignette categories (D1M, D1, D2, U). If you pay it within 60 days, you’ll pay about 3.5 times less than if you go past that period.

Hungary vignette fine for all categories (D1M, D1, D2, U)

Hungary vignette fine within 60 days: 27,790 forints (approximately 71 euros / 360 lei)

Hungary vignette fine after 60 days: 95,730 forints (approximately 245 euros / 1,245 lei)

Surcharge for a lower-category vignette

If you have a valid vignette but of a lower category than the correct one (for example, D1 instead of D2), you only pay the surcharge difference: 15,530 forints within the first 60 days

After 60 days, the surcharge difference rises to 49,190 forints

I was caught without a vignette in Hungary — what should I do?

As you saw a little earlier, pay it within 60 days. That is, if you don’t want to empty your piggy bank.

However, you have the first 60 minutes of your trip to pay the motorway toll in Hungary. Only after that period do you risk being held liable.

Keep in mind that the fine is lower if you are caught with a valid vignette that does not match your vehicle’s category. In this case, you only pay the surcharge difference mentioned above, not the full surcharge.

You will also receive a surcharge if you enter the car’s registration number or other details incorrectly. Pay close attention to the details!

Do you feel ready to travel to or through Hungary now? The vignette and road toll won’t cause you any trouble!
