Estonia vignette: validity periods and rates for trucks

If you are driving your own car on vacation in Estonia, we have good news: cars up to 3.5 tons do NOT need to buy an Estonia vignette.

Road tolls in Estonia in 2026: what has changed

As of January 1, 2024, Estonia significantly increased road toll rates for trucks and differentiated them more strongly by emission class: the daily rate now ranges between 13 and 40 euros, and the annual rate between 680 and 2,000 euros. These rates remain unchanged in 2026.

What’s new in 2026: zero-emission trucks (electric or hydrogen), which drove for free until the end of 2025, now pay reduced rates — 4 euros per day and 200 euros per year for the 3.5–12 ton category, and 6 euros per day and 300 euros per year (up to 3 axles) or 10 euros per day and 500 euros per year (4 or more axles) for vehicles over 12 tons.

Also since 2025, Estonia has introduced a motor vehicle tax (mootorsõidukimaks), consisting of an annual tax and a registration fee. However, it applies only to vehicles entered in the Estonian road register, so it does not affect Romanian drivers and hauliers in transit.

However, if you are transiting Estonia or driving a heavy vehicle over 3.5 tons for a transport job, you will have to pay the time-based road toll, known locally as “teetasu.” The advantage is that the system is fully electronic: you pay online on the official teetasu.ee portal, but also in person at border crossings or at the offices of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board.

An important point to mention is that coaches are exempt from this payment.

In this article, we will tell you everything about how and where you can buy the Estonia vignette.

Free Estonia vignette for passenger cars

If you drive your own car in Estonia, you are exempt from paying for a vignette, so you don’t have to worry about buying and paying for an Estonia vignette.

So you won’t have anything to pay to drive on Estonia’s roads.

Estonia vignette for trucks over 3.5 tons

For driving on public roads, the road toll (teetasu) is mandatory for all goods vehicles with a total weight of over 3.5 t, regardless of the country of registration. Coaches and buses are not subject to this toll, as it applies exclusively to goods vehicles.

The road toll can be paid for various periods: 1 day, 7 days, 30 days, 90 days or 365 days, and the price depends on the total weight of the vehicle together with the trailer, the number of axles, the emission class and the validity period chosen.

Below you will find details on the tolls and how to buy the Estonia vignette online.

Paying the Estonia road toll online at teetasu.ee

Estonia does not use vignette stickers or on-board devices: everything is done electronically, through the official teetasu.ee portal, administered by Transpordiamet (the Estonian Transport Administration).

This gives you a number of advantages: payment is available around the clock, 24/7, you buy the road toll exactly when you need it and you receive proof of payment instantly, with no lines and no extra trips.

How can you pay?

To pay the Estonia road toll online, you will need to follow these steps:

1. Go to the official portal teetasu.ee;

2. Enter the vehicle details: registration number, country, total weight, number of axles and emission class;

3. Choose the desired validity period (1, 7, 30, 90 or 365 days);

4. Pay by Mastercard or VISA card or by bank transfer;

5. You receive the payment confirmation and can drive with peace of mind — checks are made automatically, based on the registration number, with no physical document required.

The whole process is very quick and convenient for drivers.

You can find more about this service on the official teetasu.ee portal.

However, you can also pay the road toll in person, at the cash desks at border crossings or at the service offices of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (EMTA).

How much does an Estonia vignette cost?

In terms of price, the toll charged by Estonia is not that high compared to other countries.

For vehicles between 3.5 tons and 12 tons, the rates in effect (increased as of January 1, 2024 and unchanged in 2026) are as follows:

Fine for not paying the Estonia vignette

Driving without a paid road toll is punishable by a fine of up to 500 euros (125 fine units), and driving with a lower rate than the correct one — for example, with an incorrectly declared emission class or weight — by a fine of up to 400 euros (100 fine units).

For this reason, it is important to make sure the road toll is paid and valid before setting the vehicle in motion — you can check the payment status at any time on teetasu.ee, using the registration number.
